Birthdays

I have a few days to go before my age climbs to a steeper number, and as it always has, it makes me depressed.  I think I was like that even as a child - not so much depressed about having a birthday, but anyone making a big deal over me was embarrassing.    My dear father, the most important man in my life, always remembered even down to the exact time of my birth, and would invariably call me and announce that in x minutes and yy seconds I would be zzz years old!  It didn't make me feel any better, but I sure would love to hear him say it again.

So that is the major reason for my depression - I hate having a birthday.  I wouldn't mind so much turning a year older, but having people make a deal out of it bothers me.

The Irish farmhouse painting has me stymied for the time being.  The driveway didn't look like a driveway and when I tried to fix it, it just got worse.  This morning I ended up painting over it with a small amount of gesso.

I'm now on Series 10 of Bob Ross' videos, and still learning things from him.  I checked online at "Cheap Joe's Art Stuff" to see how much it would cost me to buy a supply of water soluble oil paints, and the answer is "too much for now at least".

These are the first 3 pictures I hung in the kitchen.  I would welcome comments as to whether or not I should put them in frames.

Another reason I'm depressed is my weight.  I don't get on the scale every day, but only once in a while.  This morning I couldn't believe it when I read "117" pounds.    I have to get it back up over 120, so after the gym this morning I made a trip to the grocery and thought about buying a 6 pack of Ensure (I hate that stuff!)  They only had regular, strength which is 220 cal. per bottle, and if I'm going to drink the vile liquidt I want the extra strength with 350 cal. per bottle!  I knew it was on sale at Costco, so I ordered a 30 pack online, and will be glad to have it delivered.  If I'm going to lift a heavy box of beverage, I'd prefer it to be a case of beer!  So three a day should last me 10 days, and I should notice an increase in my weight with the addition of 1050 cal. per day.  I'll have to be careful because it could ruin my appetite for real food.  Therein lies the problem - I have very little appetite, especially after lunch.  If I could train myself to eat a full dinner for breakfast I might be on to a solution!

Here is a photo of Jeannie's favorite cake, German Chocolate.  Everyone loved it, and as I mentioned, she cut me a little sliver that didn't have coconut on it and it was superb!

That's all for now.

  1. I can think of a lot better/tastier ways to consume a thousand calories than something that tastes nasty. But I have the opposite problem from you. My 'I'm Full' or 'had enough calories' meter has never worked. So I have to diligently count calories, do portion control with every meal and quit eating when I have reached the magic number of calories.

I like the way you have hung your paintings. But ask Jeannie or Ara their opinions when they come over next time.

Birthdays - I miss calling my mother on my birthday and wishing her a happy birthday. Cause without her I wouldn't be here. I think your dad calling you was sweet.

    1. Oh, I would much rather eat 1000 calories of ice cream, or chocolate cake, etc., but I also don't need all the sugar. If I gain weight I think it will be because I'm getting some nutrients that must be missing from my diet. Who knows though.

    2. Have you looked into a program that tracks your nutritional profile? I'm using Cron-O-Meter and I'm finding it more user friendly than the other ones I've tried. I was able to make some adjustment to my eating and supplements and I am feeling better.

    3. If I start trying to track things I will become obsessed. There is a fine line for me between trying to fix something and becoming obsessed with it.

  2. Well let me chime in and support Jeannie's choice. I LOVE German Chocolate cakes. They are my absolute favorite any time and all the time. I have to say it is pretty depressing to get old. You have nothing but poorer and poorer health to look forward to. I didn't used to mind birthdays at all and loved to celebrate them until I got to 60. At 62 I decided to count backwards and when people ask me how old I am that's what I tell them. So at 62, I was 61 and at 63, 60 and so on. I like it a lot. Try it.

    1. I have always loved the looks of German Chocolate cake, but the coconut is terrible tasting to me! I don't really mind getting older - there is no way to stop it - but it must be the celebration itself because my phobia goes back to childhood when the years didn't matter. I think it probably goes back to another life, and if I trusted hypnotherapy I would be regressed to see what is the big deal with me and birthdays!

    2. My daughter doesn't like coconut either. For her it is a textural thing.

    3. I never did like the texture, but it's also the taste. I cannot stand coconut oil or flavoring at all.

  3. If you need Ensure for weight gain perhaps your doctor would write you a prescription for it, and the money you save could go towards art supplies. My aunt had a problem keeping her weight up and she always got a prescription for her Ensure - didn't cost her anything.

I like your paintings where you hung them. I think they look nice with/without frames - it's just a different look.

    1. I haven't been to a doctor in about 3 yrs and I'm happy about that. I'm not going to see one now - they be unable to hide the gleeful looks when they think of all the tests they can send me for. I'll see if the Ensure helps and go from there. I doubt I could drink it regularly for very long because it doesn't taste good to me.

  4. I like your paintings without frames. But, then, I don't know how they would look framed. Good idea to ask Jeannie and Ara.
My "Old Man" ( term of endearment after 52 years! ) weighs 117. Only 5'6", but so skinny it is scary. He is 83. Has very little appetite, but is a regular Energizer Bunny. Abhors Ensure, I bought him some a few months ago. He poured them out. I try my best to see he has good meals,
but he eats very small amounts. I tried to increase the number of meals. No way. I just have to accept that there are things I have no control over. I made sure to tell him that "Gypsy is going to drink Ensure."

    1. Be sure to tell him it is only a 10-day test! I'm 5'6 (maybe a couple of centimeters below that) but I am lacking in energy. All my life I have had so much nervous energy and was constantly doing something. When my batteries ran down they ran out fast!

I have a good appetite for breakfast and lunch, but dinner is only a good meal when I eat at someone else's house, or Chipotle, which is about the only restaurant I will patronize! Oh, and Straw Hat Pizza.

  5. When I was sick lately I drank "Boost" it was not too bad. Now I have some extra pounds I would not mind donating to you ;-) I like the pictures the way they are, particularly the apples.

    1. I don't think I would care for any of those energy or booster drinks. But I can deal with 10 days of it, just to see if they work. Thanks for the kind words on my paintings. I'll hang the remaining 3 tomorrow.

  6. I find Dick Blick art supply cheapest of them all. Cheap Joes has good internet training videos.

    1. I didn't even look at Dick Blick this time. I'll check it out, plus look again at Cheap Joe's for the training videos.

I think of all the problems I'm experiencing, mixing colors is the hardest to overcome. I hear Bob Ross say, "I'll take a little of this color, and some of this one, and a little of that, etc." I don't have a clue why he mixes those particular colors and looking at my color wheel doesn't help. All in good time, I hope.

  7. http://www.fakefoodwatch.com/2012/08/ensure-drink-sugary-fake-food-pseudo.html You may want to read this. I wondered why my body wouldn't tolerate Ensure when I tried to gain weight. I like your idea of beer better :-D

    1. Thanks for the link, and I will certainly check it out. When I was in the hospital the doctor wouldn't release me until I had drank 3 bottles of Ensure in one day. They kept putting the stuff on my meal trays the entire time I was there, and I kept leaving them with the whole meal I didn't touch. I can get sick just thinking about hospitals. But I drank the Ensure and also bought some to drink at home for a couple of weeks. I think it helped me put the weight back on, although I couldn't stand it for very long and think I poured the last few bottles down the sink!

    2. I just read the linked website about Ensure. It sounds like awful stuff, and it is. One of my problems is that I eat a very healthy diet, mostly fruits and vegetables, but there aren't enough calories to sustain my desired weight. I try to eat less carbs and sugars, which is another way I'm missing out on weight gain. I don't know if it is my metabolism or what, but I just can't gain weight. I'm sure if I ate sweets and ice cream in huge quantities I still wouldn't gain the pounds, although my belly would reflect that kind of diet! I don't know wht to do, but I think I'll try it for 10 days and then probably never touch the stuff again. Or when it's delivered I may just return it to my local Costco warehouse and get my money back!

  8. As for me, I like the pictures unframed, especially since you
have them up high with the cabinets under them. If you put
them on a empty wall, they would probably need frames. That's just my
    opinion...... Such as it is.
Maybe when you find an opportunity, check out a health food store or
a GNC store to see what they would offer instead of Ensure.
Nice to see your paintings up where they can be seen !

    1. I just looked up ingredient info on Ensure, and it does have a lot of sugar, plus ingredients that I already supplement with, such as biotin and various vitamins/minerals. I'm not sure what the added effect of these ingredients would do to me as I seem to be extremely sensitive to overdoses of them. I was only going to use the stuff temporarily, so it isn't worth running around to find a substitute. When you think of it, the main way to add calories is with carbs & sugar. Not sure if I'll take it back to Costco or just drink the damn stuff and see if I gain any weight. Even so, I won't buy any more.

  9. Adding frames would make them to bulky over the cabinets I like the way they look.

    1. Thanks, Jo. You are right, and there isn't a whole lot of room up there for frames. I think I'll just go with them the way they are.

  11. While I do not have your weight problems (but wish I did) I sympathize with you because I am trying to get my mother to gain weight. Her doctor told her to drink two Ensures a day but I am lucky if she even drinks half of one.

Your pictures look good just the way you hung them without frames. Maybe ask one of your grandchildren, kids tend to have more of an un-bias opinion.
