Nothng but rain!

It rained and the wind blew all night long and hasn't stopped by mid-afternoon today.  They expect it to go on through tomorrow at least.  The wind is blowing it in waves and I'm getting a little tired of hearing that sound!  Here is what the water is doing to Folsom Lake, one of the reservoirs in the American River system.

“In the last 24 hours, Folsom gained over 60,000 acre feet.” (An acre foot of water would cover an acre in one foot of water.) "

It's actually very interesting what the water managers have to do to decide how to handle it all.  With all the storms in the mountains we will be getting a lot more water in the next few weeks.   They are diverting much of it to farmland - rice paddies and row crops.  I remember that from the 1980's when we lived here during a monster rain/flood season in about 1986.  But I knew it!  They are still talking about future drought; can't they just let us appreciate all the rain for a while?

I didn't get the lemon tree today - the rain was too heavy to be putting a tree into the back of my SUV and taking it out again.   I did go to the gym, thinking, "I'm only going to walk 1 mile today; well maybe a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half.  I may as well go two miles!  I think I'm becoming addicted, but that's not a bad addiction when you think of it.

The wind has picked up and is blowing open doors that shouldn't come open.  I would take a lot rain in place of the wind.  It is getting ugly!

Hope everyone out there is safe and sound.

  1. I've been reading about the rain and storms in California and it is interesting to read a first hand account. Your last paragraph concerned me. Stay safe Gypsy.

Also, we had a Meyer lemon tree in Texas before we moved to Oklahoma. It was in a pot and yielded some really nice lemons. We gave it to a friend when we left.

    1. I think I'll be ok. I live in a cardboard box with a little aluminum thrown over it, and it's called a mobile home. I'm thinking of the three little pigs now and wishing I had a house made of bricks!

    1. I am too. I sent a message to Ara asking her how she is doing, and she told me I should spend the night over at her house if I want. There is just too much that can go wrong here and I think I need to stay put. The wind seems to have died down for now.

  3. Saw the news tonight on the floods and storms you guys are having. With more to come. And I know you really need the water but it could die down a little bit. And snow up in the mountains. That would be good. You stay safe and keep checking in so we know you're okay.

    1. I'm hoping they don't get more snow in the mountains. That snow is going to melt along with all the snowpack that is already there, and it will come rushing down the mountains. That's California - too much water/not enough water. Mostly not enough so that's why most people aren't complaining too much yet. I dislike the wind!

  4. I moved to California in November of 1985. The storms were terrible then; and the rain unrelenting. It was worse than the Florida that I had just left! Not only was it as wet as Florida, it was cold! A bad combination.

    Virtual hugs,

    Judie

    1. I moved here the 1st time in Oct 1983 and stayed for 6 yrs. I never felt the cold the first few years because I had come from Cincinnati which got cold in the winter. Most days I went to work in just a business suit - didn't wear my winter coat for a few years. Now I'm chilled to the bone!

I think people can stand it because those relatively few days where it's in the 70's and 80's with sun shining are simply gorgeous. Anything above the mid-80's and I'm miserable.

  5. Glad to hear you are getting rain but really hope the wind let's up. Seems they could just celebrate the rain and not find something to have people worry about like a future drought.

    1. Things are quiet this morning although the streets are wet so it must be drizzling. I've discovered a couple of leaks in my house which isn't surprising.

  6. The California winds can really be wicked. I am glad that if necessary you can go stay with Ara and keep each other company. Stay safe.

    1. Those winds were the worst I've experienced. I hope we don't get any more.

  7. So relieved to hear you made it through the night. From what I've read online, those winds were terrible. You were in my thoughts during my waking hours in the night.

    1. The winds were the worst I've experienced in years, and they just went on and on. I've discovered a couple of leaks, but the wind was the most frightening. Thanks for thinking about me.

  8. I just read that many ski resort areas received over 4 ft of new snow during that storm. The bad thing is that no one can ski on it because of the threat of avalanche! I guess the rain and snow melt underneath it makes it unstable.
