I have been thinking for a long time about joining a gym. There is a big one, California Fitness, that is practically in sight of where I live, so I went in this morning to find out about it.
The bottom line is that I signed up for a membership, and have an appointment on Wednesday to see a trainer and set up a program for me. After touring the facilities I sort of got an idea about what I want to do and what I don't. I'm interested in flexibility, strength in my upper body, some cardio (but not too much), and a yoga class. I don't like the looks of the treadmill or other diabolical looking machines, but I hope to get back into walking outdoors again.
In checking out my Blue Cross/Blue Shield benefits online last night I saw where they will send me a fancy pedometer so I can set up a walking routine, and I can even record my walks on their website to keep track of my progress.
Pretty soon you're gonna be looking at the "new and improved" Gypsy, and I hope to derive some energy from all the working out I'll be doing. Maybe even an increase in appetite resulting in a little weight gain.
After leaving the gym I made a quick trip to Costco to see if there was anything I could buy to wear when exercising. I bought a pair of stretchy pants and only hope I don't look like a blimp in them! As a retired person I don't have a lot of extra spendable money on hand, so I decided to definitely forget the basic TV package I was about to cave in for, plus I will cancel my land line. I don't really need three phones in my house plus my cell phone, do I?
This place also has two outdoor heated pools plus a huge hot tub, and the locker room facilities seem to be top notch. I haven't been in a pool in years but I may actually give it a try, when I get to the point where I will appear in public in a bathing suit.
In the meantime, I need to go sweep the leaves off the driveway and maybe get in a little exercise at the same time!

If you want flexibility, tai chi or yoga is probably best. I'm thinking of joining a gym too. I need toning and it's hard to walk up here in the winter so a treadmill will help with that (if I can walk to the gym!)
ReplyDeleteDo a little exercise for me, will you? How about before and after photos?
ReplyDeleteYou want to put on a little weight, but are afraid you'll now look like a blimp before you put on the pounds? Something doesn't jive with those statements. :) That would be the day when you looked like a blimp!
ReplyDeleteJudy beat me to it. No way you can look like a blimp. You'll look great. Take a picture and let us see. I belonged go a gym before we went on the road and LOVED it for just the reasons you have mentioned. Specific exercise routines designed for me, pool and water aerobics, easy on the joints, yoga, wonderful for relaxing and stretching. I really miss it and if I were near cities more of the time might join one of the national ones that you can go to wherever you are but as it is, I'm so busy I don't know where I'd put it but I'd sure like to. Good move on your part. I'm going to love hearing about it from you.
ReplyDeleteI would seriously look into Taoist Tai Chi. Can't think of a better all round exercise for the mind & body. I did Tai Chi for a couple years before we moved here to Bayfield. I highly recommend it & it's excellent for the aging body. Focuses on stretching & balance.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Judy - there is absolutely no way you could look like a blimp. I'm going to have to check on that pedometer with BC/BS. I've been trying to walk more as well as get back to riding my bike. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI was all ready to join a gym when wammo this darn foot thing happened so hope it gets worked out tomorrow and it starts to heal.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy the gym and you get the results your looking for.
I get free gym membership through Silver Sneekers. I go 3 times a week and use the treadmill and stationary bike. I go to one sponsored by a church and only a mile away. The closer it is, the more likely you will go on regular basis.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! Exercise is a good thing....as M. Stuart would say. I love to walk the different areas when we park. It's strange how exercise give more energy. And I find it hard to believe that you are a blimp.
ReplyDeleteI cast my vote for T'ai Chi, too. I do stretching exercises every morning for about ten minutes before getting out of bed, and then about fifteen minutes of T'ai Chi just before I start to fix dinner. I can tell when I have been lazy or forgetful and didn't do the T'ai Chi the night before.
ReplyDeleteyeah, well... your fatness is embarrassing... f'sure... a regular blimp mobile...
ReplyDeleteI really really REEAallly need to get back into Yoga... anything! on a daily basis.... of course, diapering Charlie is quite a todo... yes, it is.
Wow exercises every morning!!! You really have to watch out for that stuff can hurt ya!! Just think in no time you will be putting up the big tent and bed frame in no time...
