I Don't Remember This

I've lived in Sacramento for a number of years, and visited during the summer for many more, but I don't remember it being this uncomfortable.   And it's only going up to 105 today, whereas I pity anyone who lives in Phoenix where it's too hot for some planes to fly!  I didn't realize that could happen.

I started to go to a credit union this morning to deposit a couple of checks, then changed my mind and put them in the mailbox!    I will be shocked when I get my electric bill this month - running the swamp cooler in the afternoons doesn't usually cost too much, but I have to have it on from mid-morning until I go to bed at night, plus run a fan to circulate the air somewhat.  I'll still be better off than if I had to pay for A/C.

It's too hot to hold my laptop, so I'll stop right here.  I hope you are all comfortable wherever you are.

  1. ONLY 105! Goodness but I guess that's true if 107 or 117 are what you've had. I don't think I could stand it. I forgot to mention on your last post how shocked I was that you had such a reaction to some poses or what I assume were stretches. I'd love to see what you did that would cause such pain. I wonder if you should ask the gallbladder people what's up with this and if it is normal after surgery and forever for you not to be able to do yoga.

    1. The exercise that caused me all the trouble is one I have had no trouble doing several years ago. You lie on your stomach, tighten the muscles and raise your arms out in front and your legs off the floor at the same time. I won't ask a doctor anything that isn't life-threatening because I don't want to go see a doctor other than the GP, cardiologist, and endocrinologist. You can get on a merry go round of doctors and and tests and I'm not going to do it. I figured out I can't do forward down-facing exercises and I don't need a doctor to tell me something I know. I accept that I can't do a lot of things I used to.

  2. I read Sac may be breaking records. Keep your place cool as possible. It looks like you did those home improvements just in time. We've both lived long enough to know this weather is highly unusual.

Maybe you should stick with those exercises you posted the other day for a while if you decide to do something.

    1. I'm sticking with the upper body exercises and walking at the gym, which I just returned from. Also, I am content that I can't walk at the speed I used to, nor can I use as heavy weights as I used to. I think I do great for my age! The heat is close to deadly, but some places have it worse than Sacramento right now and I feel for them - for all of us!

  3. I had a chuckle over your comment about Phoenix. After 105-110 it's all just hot. I find the heat here far more tolerable than the heat in Kansas. Kansas can be 105 but the humidity is 50% or more, here the humidity is 7%, which makes a Big difference in comfort.

    1. Having grown up in Cincinnati I know the mixture of heat and humidity. Add to that mix that for a long time I remember there being no air conditioning - not in my office or elsewhere. I think that is why I don't gripe about a swamp cooler vs a/c - I'm comfortable but it isn't the same cold/cool as a/c.

  4. Yes you did get those new windows just in time like Janet said. This heat is insane already. My A/C is running like crazy and I'm sure the bill will be well over $200.

    1. It is a big louvered box that sits on top of the house. You run a small water line to it; when you turn it on you allow a bit of water to run into a tray over which a big fan blows the air. The air is cooled by the water and then blows down in your house. It only blows to a central location and louvers on it direct it in all directions. It works very well up to the high 90's or 100, but above 100 you don't get the really cool air that usually comes out of it. The electricity costs aren't much more than having a big fan on. Since Sacramento has very little humidity most of the year, the air blowing over the water is more pleasant than it might be in, say, the Gulf Coast. I much prefer it to a/c although because I have a very small house and it is pretty open the air circulates well enough.

This morning is more like a Sacramento morning, with the Delta bringing up the cool ocean breezes. I am enjoying the air coming in my open windows, and they usually last until 11 or 12Noon, but the heat we've had lately prevents them from doing much. (Please forgive the long answer - I get started and can't stop!)
