Another delay

Donald took me to get the stitches out this morning.  The wound was bleeding a bit yesterday but seemed ok this morning.  When the nurse was looking at them she discovered there was a slight amount of bleeding, so they are having me return on Monday when everything will be fine, hopefully!  My brother's stitches were removed yesterday, and our accidents were on the same day last week although his  fall seemed to be much more serious.

I left Rocky in the crate and told my neighbors on both sides so they wouldn't be worried.  I have no idea if he barked a lot - he sure was happy to see me, and even happier to see Donald.

The weather has been super the past few days, and I hope it is a sign of things cooling down a bit.

Rocky is going to the vet tomorrow to get his parvovirus shot and rabies vaccination.  I'm going to double check the rabies shot because I seem to remember they don't get it until at least 6 months.  I was looking at the requirements for getting a dog license, which I haven't done yet.  For a neutered pet the fee is $15 (if I'm remembering correctly).  If the pet is intact the fee jumps to $75!  I don't intend to get him neutered until somewhere from 6-9 months, so I won't get the license either.  It's surprising they don't make a different rule for a small puppy, as there is no way a young puppy should be spayed or neutered at such a young age, and I don't intend to spend $75 for the license either.

Have a good weekend.  I have no plans except for the visiting the vet.  He looks so innocent sleeping on the floor next to me now, but he really knows how to get me riled up!  Getting into my purse and chewing up Kleenex is one way that he loves to do it.  I can see the gleam in his eye, and before I can clean up the chewed tissue he is already on his next trick!

  1. I too can hardly wait for cooler less humid days - but the weather forecast for the Hudson Valley doesn't give me much hope for the next week at least. My poor flower garden is such a mess since I can't stand being out in the humidity to work on it.
See if you can get your vet to hold off on giving the Rabies vac -- it's no longer considered a good thing to double up on given the shots. Give the parvo/distemper then wait 3 weeks and give the rabies. The experts are finding that there is less chance of the pups developing some serious autoimmune diseases that often result from reactions to multiple vaccines at one time. A friend just had to euthanize her 5 mo old puppy because she let the vet talk her into doing them all in 1 visit and the little thing developed a horrible condition. Some years ago, before the connection of multiple vaccines and immune-mediated vaccimosis was made, my daughter almost lost her beautiful Golden Retriever puppy to a autoimmune condition. Rabies vaccine is especially tough on a dog's immune system - I don't give our puppies that vaccine until they are at least 6 mo old - don't care what the authorities say!
Smart of you to hold off neutering him too. They really need those hormones for proper growth. Actually it's now being recommended to wait until close to 1 yr so the growth plates in the bones close. Otherwise you get really leggy dogs, especially in the larger breeds. Even though Cavaliers are smaller dogs, we recommend that our puppy buyers hold off on neutering and spaying. This is harder for the owners of the "girls" but so much better for the dogs' long-term health.
That cost of a license for an intact is outrageous! Can clearly see the hand of the Animal Rights folks in that one (they don't want any intact dogs ever!). I don't license my dogs until they are 1 yr old. NYS doesn't need that money that much! Give Rocky a hug....take care of yourself!

    1. Thanks for your comments, which confirm I am thinking straight about the vaccines as well as neutering. I was worried about the strength of the parvovirus shot plus the added rabies vaccine which must be strong because if I remember correctly it only has to be given every two years. I might not have that straight, but I'm almost sure that was the timeline for rabies shots with all my other dogs. I've been reading about potential future problems with neutering a dog that hasn't properly developed. It isn't just a matter of hormones, is it, but also growth and bone development plus probably a lot of things I don't even know about. Have a good weekend and I hope you get more comfortable weather soon!

    2. There's 3 things related to dogs that I'm passionate about: Following Dr. Dodd's vaccine protocol; not neutering until close to 1 yr of age; and warning about the deadly dangers of Xylitol sweetner in food. It's take a long time, but the veterinary world has finally accepted that Dr. Dodds knew what she was talking about and have adopted her protocol. No more annual vaccines for our dogs! Here's a link to her website and protocol: https://drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/post/166919932761/aaha-vaccination-guidelines-2017-for-dogs-review#.W5xkEIzD9jo
Hope you can copy it. Otherwise, just google Dr Jean Dodds vaccine protocol. You know what you're doing -- just have to catch you up to the current world of dogs :)

  2. Talk to the vet about obedience training class. He/she should know people who do a good job.

    1. I have the class scheduled which starts on Monday. It was set to begin last Monday but they advanced it one week. I'll try them out.

  3. I agree L Beman, Our dog Max developed epilepsy when we doubled up on shots. I'll never forget it. It was too much for his system.

    1. That settles it - I'm going to only get one thing at a time. The vet visit itself is going to cost $50 plus the cost of the shots, so in the meantime I may look for something less expensive.

    2. Gypsy - there are often rabies vaccine clinics - often offered by local towns or local SPCA's. Sometimes even that awful Banfield Clinics at PetSmarts (not a fan of Banfield). Part of the problem is that all the dogs get the same dose of the vaccine - so the 4lb Chihuahua gets the same dose as the adult Great Dane -- makes no sense. Makes me happy to have the master, Al, agree with me! Lynn in Kingston NY

    3. I just need someplace to give him his parvo shot, which is required for puppy classes just about everywhere here. I don't remember having this kind of trouble with any puppy or dog wherever I lived in the past. I hope I can get it done tomorrow, and be ready for his class on Monday. He sure needs some training!

  4. I am confused Gypsy, does that mean you did not get your stitches out? I had no idea one needed a dog license wonder if the same applies for cats? Will have to look up cat neutering as I was hoping to have them fixed when they turn 6 months old.

    1. Right, I did NOT get my stitches out and they gave me another appointment for Monday to remove them. I'm still having some bleeding after a week without, and I don't know what's going on. I've tried to be really careful and I'm sick of the hassle.

Yes in most areas you have to get a license for your dog - I don't know anything about cats. The dog license is usually just something you have to pay for but not do anything but apply, pay, and put the tag on their collar. Now in CA, I guess they want to reduce the unwanted pet population so they charge a lot more if your pet hasn't been spayed or neutered. Well, you can't do that to a dog until he reaches a certain degree of maturity, or you will have problems later on such as incontinence/dribbling, and I think it's all tied in with their hormonal system as well. Note, I'm not giving medical info or advice here, just relating what I understand about it.

  5. Sorry to hear your wound didn't heal all the way yet.

Reading this I just realized I didn't get the renewal forms for Fred's license in the mail he had his rabies shot Aug. 2nd these money hungry county people are usually right on the ball.

    1. They don't usually miss a trick, do they. I don't know how long I can get by without the license, but I would think if I keep him restricted to my mobile home park and on a leash, I shouldn't have any trouble. It's all about money and collecting fees.

I usually heal very fast and am surprised at how slowly this is going. I did read that wounds on the head bleed profusely, but would have thought the stitches would stop that.
