Brutal

The surgery went very well and I was able to leave the hospital by 10:00 am.  Once the anesthetic wore completely off I was in misery, which lasted through the night and into this morning.  During the middle of the night we phoned the doctor on call, and after consultation with another doctor he told me I could take alternating doses of hydrocodone and oxycodone.  The hydro has given me so many side effects, but now I'm ready to taper off and space the doses further apart.  I think I will live.

The agony is because they pump air into the abdomen, and it causes severe pain especially around the rib on the right side as well as in the shoulder.  Once I was able to get up and walking it has gotten measureably better.  It still hurts to breathe deeply and to cough is really painful, but I feel better today although I still haven't eaten anything.  I get nauseated thinking about food.

I think if I had this done 20 years ago it might not have been as hard on me, but at 73 I've had a rough time.  Thaks to everyone who has been thinking of me and wishing me well.

I ended up not going back to my house as I quickly realized I just couldn't take care of myself.  Jeannie and Ara have been wonderful!

  1. Thank you so much for the update. I am so glad it is over with. Now you can concentrate on healing. And you will feel much better once the air is gone. Glad to hear you didn't go home but let Jeannie and Ara take care of you.

  2. Thank God it's over! And you came through with flying colors - all that pain and agony is normal, so just moving around and then resting will be a big help. Can you sip chicken broth or something like that? Like you, after my last surgery I wanted to be in my own home, but I needed to be at my son's until I could get around easier and fix food, etc. You're on the way, before you know it, you'll be home and feeling fine.

Merry Christmas - I hope you can have some Christmas dinner. :)

  5. Thanks so much for the update. I thought of you many times yesterday, wondering how you were doing. I learned something today. Years ago I went for gall bladder surgery. The plan was to do it the "short", relatively new
way. For me, when I was on the table, the decision was made to do the long, big incision way. The recovery from that was long and hard. Now, today, I find out that they pump you with air and you suffer even with the "easy" surgery! The good part is that I was much better off, and so will you be, even if it takes a few days. So glad you have your family there to show their love!

  8. Our daughter (43) recently had the same surgery. She has 4 kids (5-16) so knowing she would not be able to rest we brought her home with us hor 4 days, her husband complained but she needed quite/rest.
Smart decision to go to your daughters house.

  9. Thank you for the update. Been thinking about you. Walking around is supposed to get that air moving and out of your system. Glad you stayed with your family until you can manage on your own.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful Holiday.

  16. Much relieved to read your update! The "air" will be "released" a bit at a time, but it will take several days. I had my appendix out with that method last year. The recovery period was longer than I thought it would be, but taking it easy was possible, so I did! Hopefully you will be able to do the same, and soon you will be back at the gym.

    Virtual hugs,

    Judie
