Another day of rest

I think this could be habit forming. The only work I've done today is laundry and bagging leaves that were piling up in my driveway. In the mid-50's and sunny, it was a beautiful day for hanging out the wash. The sun makes such a difference with its lovely warmth. The outdoors sometimes feels warmer than inside my house!

I don't like to set the thermostat very high in my house - never did. I have it set mainly to come on in the early morning hours when the temps reach their lowest. During the day if I'm sitting still I turn on my little electric heater. My electric bills for the past two months that I've lived here show that my usage is between 200-250 kwh per month. While I didn't request it, the Park office put me in for an energy assistance rate, which I believe is a senior low income discount. I didn't try to apply for that because I've never been considered to be in the low-income range, although maybe just above it. I'm glad to have the discount, and my electric bills range from $17 to $21 monthly. BIG, BIG difference from what RV parks charge!

I want to thank everyone who had comments and suggestions about my complaint about gmail. Shadowmoss mentioned a free program called mail.com, so I tried it and have a new email address: gypsy97 at mail dot com. For the time being my mail will be forwarded from my gmail account to the mail account, and I'll see how it goes. One thing I will be watching is the spam catcher. For some reason I am on the list to send mail about Rolex watches, viagra and sex enhancements. Gmail does an excellent job of catching the spam. (I hope my blog doesn't end up in everyone's spam catcher because of the mention of this crap.)

It was another morning of waking up to the aroma of fresh bread. I actually enjoyed getting up,and again found the perfect loaf. It is interesting that the recipes that come with this particular bread machine ALL call for 1 tsp of lemon juice, and I already had a bag of lemons in my fridge so I use fresh juice. Wherever I go in Sacramento this time of year I see the bright yellow of lemons on trees overhanging fences, and once in a while oranges and tangerines. I may try to find a small lemon tree that can be planted in a big container for my backyard. We all miss the tangerines that loaded down Bill's backyard trees. At Christmas time he used to send the large flat rate boxes from the Post Office to friends and relatives all over the US, and I'm sure they all miss it too. But I digressed from the discussion of lemon juice. Does anyone have an idea what this does to the bread making process? I looked in my other cookbooks and find nothing even similar in bread recipes.

  1. You shouldn't think you didn't do anything today. After all you did laundry and hung it on the line. I sure miss hanging laundry out. Can't do that here in the park. Back East I alway hung out the clothes, love the way they smell.
Sounds wonderful to wake up to the smell of fresh bread.

  2. Lemon juice in your dough is used to help with the protein structure so the loaf raises higher. Reference http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/18034/bread-dough-enhancer

  3. Yeast likes an acidic environment. Although the fermentation process naturally creates an acidic environment, to make yeast even happier, you increase the dough’s acidity a bit, by replacing some of the liquid with an acidic liquid (a tablespoon of orange juice, lemon juice or vinegar). This is especially helpful when you’re following a sweet bread recipe, one in which the yeast will be slowed down by a larger amount of sugar.
Love your new "cheerful yellow" walls in your livingroom and hall!

  4. I'll have to give that mail.com a look see. Just about anything has to be better than what is currently offered in the way email programs.

  5. You are not alone with the sex spams. I get them every day, but my junk file is good at catching them.

I envy you that fresh, fresh fruit.

I think laundry is a big chore, but I have a man and a dog to wash for too.

  6. New to me, lemon juice in bread. But reading the comments above, i now understand it. I used to hang all my laundry out too, not able to, any more. Living on a fixed income, i learned a lot of ways to be frugal.
You take your time, enjoy your new home.

  7. Glad my suggestion helped. I checked my mail.com account today and no spam, but I don't use it much to have it 'out there', so it's not a great example.
