I've got the bug!

The traveling bug is what I'm referring to.  I don't want to go far, but I want to go camping, maybe in a National Forest campground.  If I go midweek I should miss all the drama and hopefully most of the RV's, although that's doubtful.  I don't think they should ever mix tent camping with RV spots, but they all seem to do it.  I'm not talking about the big RV's, but the smaller trailers.  They seem to be the worst for stringing up lights, security cameras, etc.  I hate to be pissy about it because if I could afford, and have the time to use, a small trailer such as a teardrop or runabout, I'd love to have one.

So how did I digress to this point?   Back to camping, I'd like to stay fairly close to home, although there are some terrific campgrounds in the middle of the country too.  What I really would like is an area where I can see the stars in the night sky, and have a bit of privacy and quiet.  Finding a suitable place which is easy to get to without driving on a major road or interstate will be the challenge.  It's probably not going to happen, but I'm going to dream about it.

I woke up in the middle of the night to a strange sound for May 31 - RAIN!  It sounded like a soft, gentle rain that went on for some time, and when I woke up a couple hours later it was still raining softly.  You'd have to live in California to understand my amazement - many or most of the states get rain year around, but we normally only get it during the winter months, if at all.

I just cleaned up the kitchen from breakfast and looked at the clock - my goodness, it's already Noon!  It will be at least another hour or two before I'm ready for another meal.  The days and weeks just fly by too fast for me to keep up any more.

The last two days I tried to cut back on the bacon & eggs, or eat something else, but I have been so lethargic I went back to 2 slices of bacon and 2 eggs this morning and I feel so much better!  The bread is pretty bad though - it doesn't taste bad but it crumbles and falls apart.  I think I will try toasting it and maybe get better results.  It seems like a waste of time to get the toaster down from the cupboard for one slice of bread.

Still no hummingbirds.  I cleaned the feeder and put new nectar out - a little more this time.  I'll just have to be patient.  It is possible that there are a lot of flowers this year due to the rains we've been having, so maybe the birds will be visiting my feeder a little later in the season.

My son needs to borrow my car this afternoon so that takes care of the ToDo list I made.  I don't feel like rushing out to get things done, and nothing is that important anyway.   I discovered I have another week before the library book is due.

  1. You must be really feeling better to have the camping bug. I am really glad to hear it. Keep eating those things that make you feel better and I hope you find a good place to retreat. Be sure to have a family member with you.

    1. I've always liked to camp by myself when I had a dog - after Lady died it just wasn't the same. Family members have to go on weekends, and then you have the big deal with campfires (I don't like them these days), and all that goes with family camping. I'd love to go during the week when all is quiet, and then have the family join me on a Friday & Saturday night. I could deal with that.

little rains through out the summer. Wouldn't that be refreshing?

    1. It would be wonderful. Now THAT would be climate change at its best!

  3. Just thinking of how times have changed -- I've been reading the news too much. Hope you find the perfect safe get-a-way. I understand completely the need to be alone with the luxury of unstructured time.

    1. I have always been cautious. I felt safe with my dog, Lady; the only times I've gone camping alone without a pet have been to a Corps of Engrs campground, which I've always felt safe in, and to two different Forest Service CG's. For personal safety I think COE is a little better, but it all depends on the campground host, if there is one, and what they will tolerate. Still, it pays to be careful of your surroundings, and if I didn't feel completely safe I would pack up and leave right away.

  4. There is nothing like a dog companion. I still miss my border collie so much. The only bad thing about a good dog is they don't last. I forgot what breed Lady was, but she was the perfect dog for you.

    1. Lady was a shepherd mix and the perfect dog for me at the I was when I got her. She was extremely laid back and made few demands. My black lab Smoky was my perfect dog at the age I was when I had him, and he accompanied me on the approx. 800 miles of Appalachian Trail I backpacked. It was very hard on my legs and on his though. So if I got another dog I would prefer a laid back pet, but also would prefer a male. They like to stay close to you and will always wake up when you leave the room, and follow you to whichever room you are going to. I found the female didn't do that - so independent! I loved both of them but they were certainly different. My ideal would be another black lab.

    2. Perfect for me at the AGE I was when I got her. (I should have proofread before sending.)

  5. If you are contemplating camping, I know you are definitively feeling better! I so wish I could go, I think it would definitively bring down my stress level.

Like the song, I know it hardly rains in California, so I am happy for the rains you have been receiving. On the other hand, here in Texas we have been getting way too much rain and it has me on pins and needles.

    1. What is the biggest danger (or problem) with the rains in your area. I know you've mentioned high winds, thunder and lightning. Have hurricanes ever made their way inland as far as you are?

    2. My mother's house is at the bottom of a hill, we get all the run off when it rains heavily, that is how we lost part of the cinder block fence a few years back when we got six inches of rain in one day. We are too far inland to get hurricanes but tornados have hit the Del Rio and Ciudad Acuña area in the past.
