Flooding in CA

I think I'm fairly safe from the water that could threaten if the dam in Oroville gives way.   Of course one can never tell.  My d-i-l Megan has opened their home to her parents, a niece and her friend - all from Yuba City which has been evacuated.  Steve & Meg's home isn't in the most protected area from flooding, but so far so good.

I noticed the American River on my way to and from my chiropractor appointment this morning and the water levels are higher, nearly covering a footbridge close to the Sunrise Blvd bridge that I was on.   I'm sure they are letting water out of Folsom lake to prepare for more rains that are expected later this week, plus when the snowmelt begins in the Sierra it's going to be phenomenal this year.  There is still 12 ft of snow in some areas from what I've read, and the snowmelt is when "my" side of Sacramento will be threatened.  I give credit to the water management people in the state government though , and know they have a monumental job to do that involves some degree of guessing.  I'm no expert on this matter by any means, so if any of you know something about it please comment.

I'm determined I'm not going to blog any more about my health issues, so if that is the only thing on my mind you won't see a post for that day.  I thank you all for your patience.

    1. I had no idea how big that thing is! I believe much of the water held in it goes to agricultural in southern CA as well as the Los Angeles area. At least I think that's how it is. California always has water woes and things won't ever change. It's either too little or too much!

  3. I also had no idea how large that dam was. Hopefully a couple days of no rain means they can shore it up some more and praying that it won't break stay safe - you and your family.

    1. I also did not realize how large the dam is. I hope they can save it and not have water spreading all over the state - southern CA will really need it soon. I also didn't realize that a large source of their water comes from Oroville.

  4. Be safe. Evacuate if you feel it is necessary.

    1. I think if officials ever said "Evacuate" for any reason at all, I'd be out the door. I don't think my location would ever warrant it, and if it would, it would be some kind of disaster that I probably couldn't get away from. I probably fear an earthquake more than anything else.

  5. Hope your son's place stays safe from this. The last update I caught said the water had started to go down but then more rain is expected. Sure hope they can get some control before then.

    1. I'm almost afraid to ask him if he is in the path of a potential flood. If we have several days of rain coming up, I guess we are all in some danger. The Sacramento river comes from the northern part of the state; the American river which is what I live about a mile from, comes from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the east. My son lives fairly close to where the two rivers meet, so it could be a dangerous situation. When the snows start melting is when I could be in some danger, but hopefully not.

  7. Been watching the events unfold on TV. That dam is huge! All the people fleeing the area at the same time reminded me of massive hurricane evacuations. Some people did not have but a couple of minutes to grab something and leave. They tell you to have important documents, your medications and be ready to evacuate should the need arise.

Heard they were planning on dropping big rocks into the dam's damage side to shore it up. Was worried about your son and his family. May they and all the residents stay safe.

    1. I think they have dropped some big rocks to the damaged side, but the biggest worry is that we are expecting several more days of rain, and that could be the straw that broke the camel's back.

  8. My sons house and land is at bottom of the dam. He is living in his truck in the mountains with his two large dogs. He will not leave them to go to a shelter.

    1. Oh my goodness, that is serious. I hope you will keep us informed about how he is getting along, and I will keep him and his dog in my prayers.

  9. I really hope the dam holds. It is quite an undertaking to manage the water. I wish they would just let the rivers run free and the people would not build in the flood plains.

    1. You are, in effect, wishing away the 7th largest economy in the world. The dams collect and hold life saving water for people all through the state, and provide blessed water for the crops enjoyed by people all across the country. This state, country, and in fact, this world has just grown and has so many people that it can't be like it was when just the indigenous people lived here and could move to where the water happened to be.

I think the world is way too crowded and overpopulated, but that is the way it is.

  10. Well said Gypsy. Water is a large money maker for the states & is wasted to extreme by so many. But, I especially agree with overcrowding. Prayer for you & your family. Becki
