Still nothing new

There just hasn't been much going on in my life to write about lately.   I have been feeling a lot better and attribute that to the recent changes in my diet, but that could be temporary so I won't celebrate yet.  I'm gluten-free, mostly grain free, dropped most of the fruit I was eating, and now I make sure I'm getting lots of meat in meals.   Oh, and I'm cutting down on dairy although haven't given up certain items yet (butter and 1/2 & 1/2 are two that I will probably never give up).

I also read that if you have severe indigestion you should eat some fermented foods every day, so I found an organic brand of sauerkraut in the dairy case at the grocery.  It is made buy a small company, not at all like the kind you buy in a jar.  I love it and eat a couple heaping tbsp with my dinner every day.  I think it makes a huge difference.  Most of the stuff I've tried has too strong a vinegary taste, but this isn't bad at all.

I have my entire day free until I join the girls at the gym after work, so I made a trip to Costco.  I had no list and walked up and down every single aisle in the store.  I wanted to buy some bermuda shorts but they are low-waisted and they would hang below the belly.  What an ugly concept except possibly for a skinny young girl who has never given birth.  The rest of us should probably stay out of them.

I've been thinking about getting out my little charcoal grill but doubt if I'll ever use it again.  It's hardly worth it to grill for just myself.

If I'm going to take a quick nap I should do it soon.  Hope everyone has been having a great week.  I love our cooler weather and we expect one more glorious day of it before the temps start to climb into the uncomfortable zone!

  1. I don't understand low waisted anything on anybody. You really got your exercise at Costco. We get Rocky's eye medicine there and try to plan it around lunchtime so Jim can havea piece of pizza. Since I don't eat cheese, that is about the only time he can have that treat. 108 here yesterday. Only!!! 101 today.

    1. The Costco here has a pulled pork sandwich (most of the time) that is truly delicious. I only get it now and then - today I was still so full from breakfast I couldn't even try any of the samples.

  2. Have to jump on the bank wagon about those low waisted pants and shorts and skirts. They look terrible on everyone. You'd have to be twiggy before your abdomen wouldn't pooch out above those waists. How can those girls think they look nice. Why in the world do they follow ugly fashions. Just like those boys with the crotch of their pants around their knees. PLEASE! Ok enough. I love sauerkraut and particularly on mashed potatoes. BUT watch the sodium content in it. Usually very high. Glad to hear you are feeling much better. I really do believe we are what we eat. And it sounds like we each have to figure out what is best for our personal bodies. Meat makes my cholesterol JUMP up.

    1. I am anxious to get my blood retested for a lot of reasons, including cholesterol. Last time the total was right around 100 and that is too low for me. I was nearly catatonic and wanted it to be higher. I know from past experience that ultra low can be as bad as high. I don't worry so much about my sodium intake - I use salt moderately and my blood pressure is so low I wouldn't think of cutting out or down on salt. I am feeling so much better and will continue to work on diet/nutrition.

I don't understand who dictates the styles, but I think maybe my mom was just as frustrated when I was young and mini skirts became popular. I wonder if there are bunch of designers sitting around a table somewhere, laughing, and saying, "Let's see if we can get away with xxx".

  3. Glad you are feeling better and getting some foods that work for you. Was it Hippocrates who said "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food"? Fermented foods are definitely a good thing and it sounds like you have so many options in your area.

I'm not the right shape to wear these "low rider" pants. They fell to my feet one day in town. Fortunately, I was hidden behind my car door. It seems to be the style to look "sloppy" these days.

Today I picked some fresh green beans to go with my new potatoes. I sit near the garden under the trees and snap the beans and enjoy watching the hummingbird feeder. I've never had one before. I am going to experiment with fermenting small amounts of my produce (maybe).

Salt is necessary and important. As long as it is not store bought "refined" it's okay in moderation. I use pink Himalayan and also French Gray Salt from the San Francisco Salt Company or other online sites. I enjoy experimenting with different salts.

BTW, I tried the gluten free bread recipe and won't make it again. Too much work and I just don't like it.

    From your Wordy friend.

    1. My granddaughter has made her own fermented foods before, and we discussed trying it one of these days. I use Himalayan pink salt, and Hains sea salt in the pan of water when I cook vegetables.

I bought another kind of gluten free bread - I think it is made from tapioca flour. It's organic whereas the first loaf I tried wasn't. They wouldn't taste so good if I hadn't been avoiding bread for a while, but I don't mind them with my bacon and eggs.

Fresh home grown green beans and new potatos sound so appetizing. Enjoy!

  4. You know you are eating right when you have to eat everything you don't like. . . (grin)

    1. True, but I think I am at, or nearing the stage where I will eat and do what I enjoy. Within reason, of course, but whatever it is I'm doing (or not) I feel perfectly happy!
