Still Bumbling Along!

I'm trying my hardest to stay on track, and so far this week I'm doing ok.  I've been walking every day and taking daily aspirin as the cardio advised me.  I am shocked that I haven't started bruising and wonder if it was working, so I sent a msg to the dr., who responded that I shouldn't worry and that it is working.  I really don't want the bruises but was just surprised not to get them.

I searched until I found gluten-free bread at Bel Air this morning.  It was in a special gluten-free section, on the bottom shelf and hidden by a display stuck in front of it.  There were several kinds and I was expecting it to be awful.  Surprisingly, it wasn't bad at all and I really enjoyed a slice with my dinner.  I guess when a bread lover as I am is deprived of it for a while, I'm not as hard to please!

The swamp cooler is doing a fine job of keeping me cool!   The mornings here are cool enough that I can open windows and need to put my bathrobe on; about Noon or so things warm up and I'll take all the help I can get staying comfortable.

I've eaten the last of the beautiful fruit basket from Mother's Day.  Last night I enjoyed the big chocolate heart on a stick that was in the display.  Today I ate the rest of the kale which was arranged to look like grass on which  the display was built.   What a wonderful treat it has been.

I'm not sure what my weekend holds, but I'll enjoy it no matter, and  hope to see some of my kids/grandchildren.   Mike's oldest son (in NY) will be turning 12 in about another week or so.   They grow up so fast and I grow old so fast.   Ah, life.  I hope everyone has a great weekend.

  1. Grocery stores drive me crazy, I know why they set them up the way they do but what a pain to find certain things. Glad you found the gluten free bread and enjoyed it.

    Yes all the kids are getting older making us older too.

    1. I'm updating my calendar with all the birthdays, which I neglected to do the first of the year. All those grandkids - I sure don't want to miss their birthdays.

      I'm glad I found the bread and that I like it. I have to be careful I don't eat too much of it because it does contain grains, and I noticed also that it has soy which I try to not eat. But it's never bothered me - I just make sure I'm not eating genetically modified foods, which soy usually is. The loaf says non-GMO, so I won't worry.

  2. I would have eaten that chocolate thing long before this. My chocolate addiction is overwhelming some days. I'm really trying to cut back and eventually stop it completely but I'm not doing very good. And give up bread - not happening. I've found a multi-grain, omega 3 bread that we can get at the bread store for $1/loaf. I love it. I'm still waiting for that grandbaby so I have a birthday to remember. lol

    1. Giving up chocolate (for the most part) has been the hardest thing I've done so far. Actually, I crave sweets a lot. Bread is another one that is surprisingly addictive, but I like the gluten free version I found so I can do it. On the rare occasions I go out for dinner I don't eat the rolls they bring out first - if I even started on them I would ruin my appetite and I wouldn't be able to eat the meal. Good thing I don't like to eat in restaurants!

  3. I found a gluten free bread recipe the other day I'm going to try out. It sounds very interesting -- almond flour, coconut flour and arrowroot, ground chia and psyllium. No grains. I'll let you know if it is any good. The downside is you have to make it yourself, but it sounds easy enough. It makes two little round loaves.

    1. I bought a small bag of gluten free flour but I think it's rice flour. I'm kidding myself that I'm ever going to bake anything with it! I like the bread I bought well enough and it claims to be certified non-GMO; however, it contains soy, and while I guess there is organic/non GMO soy I can't imagine where it would be grown. Certainly not in the midwest. I will try other brands if and when I come across them. Please let me know how your recipe turns out.

  4. My husband and I tried gluten free for a year and it didn't make much difference for us. I am very particularly fond of the Vitaspelt White flour we use a lot.

    We like Sprouted Ezekiel bread, spelt bread and sourdough breads. The fermentation of the sourdough is supposed to use up most of the gluten. I have been experimenting with all of them and don't seem to have a problem. I make sure everything is grown organically.

    My MIL is a true celiac and has avoided all gluten for the past thirty years or so and has become a really good cook over the years. She is healthy and in her 80's and avoids all grains.

    Have you heard of einkorn flour? I have been using it recently to make banana bread, pancakes, etc. and it is really good. I use the Jovial brand. Many people who have gluten problems can eat this flour. It is an ancient unhybridized Egyptian wheat and has a rich, nutty flavor. It can now be found in specialty stores and purchased online. I don't like all the starchy gluten free breads and flour blends, etc. and think perhaps they are not good for me either. I avoid all soy as most of it is GMO. I have read the problem with wheat is not GMO, but rather they spray it with glyphosate at harvest time to dry it out and make it faster to harvest. See Dr. Stephanie Seneff's you tubes.
