Bring on the Pineapple Express!

It looks like now the predicted high today will only be 102, down 2 degrees from the 104 that was originally forecast.

To amuse myself I looked up various websites to see what the coming winter might hold - hoping Sacramento would be blessed with a frigid cold streak. It won't happen, but I discovered this little statement about the Pineapple Express. I don't like to think of excessive rains with a roof that has always leaked, but I'd love to be where the incredible snow events take place.

The famed "Pineapple Express," a phenomenon that occurs when a strong, persistent flow of tropical moisture sets up from the Hawaiian Islands to the West Coast of the U.S., could develop for a time this winter. This phenomenon often leads to excessive rain and incredible snow events.

Steve is going to drop by tomorrow morning before the temps start to rise (supposedly to 105F) and see if he can figure out how to hook up the swamp cooler. I went to Home Depot this morning and the portable a/c's that you can move from room to room are expensive. The window units won't work with the type of windows I have. So I'm screwed (although another term comes to mind) and will have to go with the swamp monster on the roof. I didn't see anything like a mister at HD, that I would be happy to set up on my driveway and move out there from Noon to 10 pm.

I'm trying to drink copious amounts of water but now and then substitute a cold beer. I hope when the weather cools I can easily reduce the amount of beer I've been drinking lately. (It's really not all that much - the beer gets warm before I can make a dent in it because of the temps, so I often put the opened can into the freezer for a while until it gets cold again.)

The hummingbirds are emptying the feeder almost as fast as I can fill it. The wasps like it too, and when I see several flying around I go outside with a bottle of windex spray. I figure that can't be poisonous so as to harm the birds, and I don't spray it near the feeder. I have noticed times when two hummers will alight and drink at the same time - something they don't normally do. When times get tough we all have to pull together!

  1. this the time of year that the hummers are fattening up for the trip south, although you would think that Sacramento is already pretty south. As for the A/C I think half baked is a better description of your predicament. I mean that in the best possible sense though. Think about cool mountain creeks and high mountain glaciers.

  2. If you don't get relief soon, I'm thinking well done is more appropriate than half baked! :)

If it's humid as well as hot, the swamp cooler should help I would think.

  3. Or is it that swamp coolers only work well in dry climates? I'm confused. :(

  4. Why don't you look for a used air conditioner? My nephew had one of those ones that you move around when he was living in an apartment with no a/c. My niece is now using it in her apartment. They work well.

  5. I lived in Spokane where the "pineapple express" would come often in late winter. Rain on snow, blickh, but I swear you could smell the tropics on those winds.

  6. If it were me I think I'd just say the hell with it & get me some kind of air conditioning. At this age & stage of the game we can all use a few perks..........

  7. No matter what you get or do, I sure hope you can stay cooler in the summers. It's not going to let up for a few years, so says the climate people.

Swamp coolers are like the RV AC, they work very hard and keep the temps down to about 85 in high temps.

    Good luck

  8. For those that want to know. Swamp coolers don't work worth a crap when humidity is over 45 to 50%.....or over 25% when outside temp is above 100 deg. I just checked the humidity in Sacramento (23%), yes, the swamp cooler will work.

  9. Get yourself a pool for your backyard. Just a little kiddy one would suffice. They are pretty cheap and can be pretty relaxing on a hot day.

  10. Virginia has the right idea for now. Take it easy in that heat.

  11. Swamp coolers won't work worth a dam,,,when the water that is circulating is hot. Just blows hot air. Been there, done that.

  12. I know how that heat can be in Sacramento area, I grew up there before A/C. Think about The coast for some relief in N.CA, OR & WA. My sister live in Auburn CA but always come to Or & WA for relief during the summer.

  13. I live in Arizona, our swamp cooler is our shrine to comfort. It doesn't work quite as well during monsoon, but it still cools the house, is cheap to run, and easy to maintain. Everybody has them here, even hospitals. Couldn't live without it!
