Comments and spam

A couple of days ago I changed my settings so that anyone could comment, and hoped the spammers would leave me alone.  I immediately got a couple of spams and the number is growing.  Blogger catches them, fortunately, but I do have to go back and delete them.  I'll let it go for now, but if the spam gets much worse then I'll either change the settings or quit blogging.  All of the comments so far have been the same - evidently a human doesn't decide where to leave the spam but a machine does.  I'm sick of the whole thing.

If I do go back to removing anonymous commenters, is it for readers to be limited to Google users, or what they call Registered users including OpenID?  I really don't know how one becomes a registered user, nor am I familiar with Open ID.

I'm sorry about this.

  1. Sorry you are having the aggravation of spammers, Gypsy.

I was sick of it too, so mine doesn't accept anonymous comments any more. If they want to comment, they can get a Google account or another acceptable ID.
    Happy Trails, Penny.

  2. I set mine to not allow anonymous comments. If someone who doesn't have a Yahoo or Google or some kind of ID and they want to contact me ~ I have the email subscription gadget.

People who like to read blogs and participate really need to get some sort of ID to prove they're real folk! easy peasy

You have your email available if anyone wants to really contact you to comment on something.

  4. I get anonymous comments all the time too. I just delete them. They usually don't say anything that has to do with the blog so I am like you it must be like telemarketing it just sends them randomly. They are annoying.

  5. I shut down my anon comment section a few weeks ago. I just got too annoyed with their fake urls & comments. When it came right down to it, I didn't get any real comments on that section from real folks anyhow. Now I no longer get spams & no more emails about them! Yay!

  6. I don't rekon I've ever seen any spam comments on your blog, but I can guarantee they do happen. I've had a couple in the last few days. I don't click on any links, so it don't bother me a bit it they are there or not.
As for Anony comments, I would never turn them off...unless things was really bad. Some my fav. comments come from Anony's.

  7. I leave anonymous on so folks don't have to join something to be able to comment on my blog. So they can use name/url if they want to. I really love the comments and feel a sense of loss if I don't hear from folks I've come to know. I just go in once a week and delete everything by anonymous although every once in a while I find a real comment in among them so I'm glad I at least skim them. I can tell trash by the first line.

  9. I have one dear friend who posts as anonymous so I haven't blocked them yet. If I can get her to get a google account, then I will. In the meantime the stupid things just get deleted over and over again.

  10. Gypsy, what ever you do, please don't stop blogging. Gee, would your absence leave a hole in lots of people's worlds!

It's easy enough to get a Google ID, and if somebody wants to tell you something privately, you DO have your email address front and center. I found it when I wanted it!

  11. Don't stop blogging. I am looking forward to your writing every day and if you don't blog, something will be missing. I rarely get spam but then again I don't get many comments anyhow.

  12. I get a bunch of garbage in my comment section and for the most part google has caught it all.. But I have also had a lot of legitimate comments caught in the spam files... But I just take the what are you going to do attitude and clean things out about once a week... I have never let it anger me... its just machine generated and the programs aren't people with any intent.. They're just machines with no brains at all... So toss it out like a piece of waste paper and I move on... Rod

  13. I ended our 'Anonymous' comments last summer & have never regretted that. It not only stopped all the Spam but stopped someone from posing as an Anonymous commenter to leave rude & sarcastuc remarks.
