The cast is off!

I'm just wearing a different kind of brace.

It is a bit less intrusive and not as heavy, but still a  pain in the ....   At least I can remove it to shower.   My hand seems to be permanently deformed, but I can live with that even though it is really ugly.  I want the pain to go away!

  1. So glad the cast is off. The hand will look more normal in a couple days. What did the doc say about the pain?

    1. The hand is never going to look normal again. I'll be happy if and when the pain subsides.

  2. It would be wise to have Physio Therapy as a way of not only getting full usage back but to overcome the Pain.
Be Safe and Enjoy the brace.

    It's about time.

    1. My daughter is fortunate to be working from home, and I'm fortunate she is available to take me to necessary appointments. I need to see my cardiologist, but know that is going to lead to tests, so I try to put it out of my mind. I'm not going to go to physical therapy if I can help it. I think I've reached my breaking point with medical issues.

  3. I'm just wondering about your doctor and why your hand should be permanently deformed.

    1. It isn't the doctor's fault. I took a terrible fall and landed in the worst possible position. The bone structure of my entire hand, and no doubt to my arm, is permanently affected.

  4. Please, if your doctor refers you to physical therapy go. That is generally the key to getting full use of your limb again. Just an example, two friends fractured their ankles, both had to have surgery. One followed the doctor's instructions and did every session of physical therapy and exercises at home. Today you would not know she had fractured that ankle. The other friend did not follow through with prescribed physical therapy and exercises. Today, three years later still has a limp. If you want to have full use of that hand in the future you must follow your doctor's instructions. I say all of this with kindness and wanting you to feel better.

  5. I understand that you want to help me. In 3-1/2 months I will be 80 yrs old. I've led a very active and fulfilling life, but now I've lost the energy and will to overcome this. Also I have to consider that my daughter, who has a family and a life of her own as well as her own issues, must spend her time driving me to all of these appointments. I couldn't ask for a more wonderful daughter, but there is a limit to what I will ask of her.

  6. I know that is quite a relief to have the cast off. And to be able to remove the brace so you can shower. Your Dr. may order home PT at least you won't need to bother anyone to drive you around.

    1. I need to see if there are exercises I can do at home, but I need to wait until some of the pain has subsided.

    2. Your hand is likely different but here is my story. After a shoulder surgery to attach detached muscles and other silly injuries, the PAIN did not stop until the PT was being done for several weeks. Would the pain have stopped? The Doc said no.

    3. So I should do the physical therapy.

    4. Yes! Medicaid should pay for your transportation by uber or taxi or a senior transport too. Or to have someone come to your home to do the PT... Please do it! And it will help make the pain go away....

    1. Sometimes I feel like I should be doing a lot more "moving"!

    2. The cast was only step 1 of recovery. Please get PT started immediately. That is where the real healing & pain relief begins. Plus, getting out & working with a therapist will help with the mental pain & depression you are feeling too. Good Luck - you have many supportive readers & a huge loving family. 🌷

  8. I think I understand that your main concern is not having to rely on your daughter as she has a life of her own and would have to make time to take you to your appointments.

Though totally different from your broken arm when my mother fell and tore up her leg her doctor sent her to PT. She was given the option of home therapy or a little bus that could take her and bring her back home.

She felt that I was already doing too much and chose the little bus but I nixed that idea because that is why I moved back to Del Rio to take care of her. Of course, I am not working nor do I have a family of my own to look after. The machines that they have at their main therapy center are far better than those they can bring with them for home therapy.

Clearly, this was before coronavirus and that changes everything now. I sincerely hope your pain goes away.
