Thanks to Commmenters

Thanks to those who recommended I try Mucinex for my cough & allergies.  I bought some this morning, took one at about Noon, and 5 hours later I can see a big difference.  If I'm awake some time around midnight I'll take another one and I feel sure I'll be ok soon.  I don't recall if the symptoms go away as long as the pollen is in the air, but I'm hopeful that at least I won't have the cough.  I haven't experienced anything like this for years and I'm not handling it well, so my thanks to those of you who recommended taking Mucinex.

The rain all day makes the world seem so dreary, but I'd rather than this type of weather than blazing heat and sun.  I don't think the rain has let up much since it started some time overnight. I hope it's also falling where needed for the farms and orchards.

I wish all of you a good weekend, wherever you are.  I'm so grateful to feel this much better than yesterday.  Where would I be without the kind suggestions and comments from readers.  I appreciate you all!

  1. I'll have to try mucinex next year when it hits me. Glad to know it's worked so well.

    1. I hope you like it as well. It seems to be working and I'm anxious to see what the next dose or two does for me.

  2. On your recommendation I'm going to get some mucinex and hope it works on my cough and itchy burning eyes. I haven't had allergies but the last couple of years I guess I have but they haven't been anything like they are this year.

    1. I sure hope it works for you. I still have some congestion and a cough, but nothing like it has been. I Take the 12-hr pills twice during 24 hrs, and the difference is amazing, with no side effects.

  3. Mucinex is an expectorant Not an antihistamine. It will not relieve allergy symptoms. What Mucinex or guaifenesin does is soften up the mucus your lungs are making so it easier to cough up or get rid of the mucus. Thus, helping to keep secondary infections (stuff trapped under the mucus from multiplying).

There are several good antihistamine on the market that don't make you drowsy like Benadryl. The one I use is Loratadine it's the generic for Claritin. By the way, if you have high blood pressure do not get antihistamines with a decongestant in them as the decongestants raise blood pressure. Decongestants also dry the mucus out.

How do I know all this? I'm a life-long allergy sufferer and I ended up with pneumonia one year because I didn't stay on top of my allergies.

    1. I appreciate your clarifying a subject that I think most people get confused with. I only know I feel so much better after taking the Mucinex, and yes, it helps to cough up some of the stuff my head seems full of. I am going to try to avoid taking an antihistamine if I can. I know Benadryl has given me frightening reactions, but somehow I would keep taking one now and then to get relief. I won't ever touch the stuff again, nor do I even want to tempt fate with an alternate. Many people have way worse symptoms than I do.

    2. Your welcome!

I've taken a variety of antihistamines over the years. The two worst were: 1)that was so powerful I could acknowledge I had a name but for-the-life-of-me I couldn't tell you what it was. and 2)you had about 30 minutes after you took it to get all your personal business done because you would be sound asleep wherever you were until it was time to take the next dose. Then, you add rounds of large doses of Prednisone(adrenocortical steroids) in the mix. I'm not sure, how I functioned well enough, to go to school and hold down a job all those years. I'm glad I now live somewhere my allergies don't bother all that often.

    3. You are fortunate to be able to move away from the "allergy zone". I have had bouts of allergies throughout my life, but never as bad as recently. I wondered if it had something to do with the treatments for cancer, but that might not have anything to do with it.

  4. I have been taking Mucinex for the last couple of days also. I have the same symptoms as you do and it has really helped a lot.

    1. I've learned what it does, as well as what it doesn't do, and I'm amazed at how fast it works. I was out in the park with some of my family yesterday, and I was surprised that it didn't seem to bother me so much. I think that all the green and growing stuff had already released their pollen, at least until the next round.
