Let there be light!

As anyone who reads my blog knows, I suffer from macular degeneration.  There are probably other issues related to aging eyes as well, and I find I need bright light to function - read, clean, cook, etc.  I love the LED bulbs that are available, especially the 100 watt bulbs.  They stay cool and cost very little to operate, although they are way more expensive to buy.  I purchase Cree brand at Home Depot, and a 100w bulb costs over $10.  But it supposedly has an extremely long life, costs much less in energy use, and I feel it is worth it just for the superior light output.

Yesterday I drove to Home Depot after visiting the market, and bought two bulbs for my kitchen.  What a difference!  I am so happy with the light and love being in the kitchen now because I can see so well.

I appreciate the layout of the house during summer months as it seems to block harsh sunlight coming in the windows.  It also makes everything indoors a bit darker, and I'm delighted to find the LED bulbs improve my sight.

Jeannie and her family went with me to the gym on Friday evening.  We went to the one nearer to their house rather than the one closest to me.  The kids love the Kids Club there, and Donald can play basketball.  ("My" gym has 3 racketball courts, but no basketball.)  I did a fairly strenuous workout and even last night (Saturday) my muscles hurt.  I'm fine now and can't wait to get back.

(I moved a couple of paragraphs around and proofread this post a couple of times, so I hope I got it straight.)

TV is so disgusting lately that I spend more time watching YouTube videos.  I've heard that "sitting is the new smoking" and I sure hope not.  I sit way too much.

I checked my library account and find I'm now 29th out of 169 patrons on the list for Marie Kondo's "Magical Art of Tidying Up".  I'm putting a lot of hope in this book to help me get control of organizing my stuff and getting rid of a lot of it.  I cancelled the hold I placed for Whitley Streiber's "Communion".  I read the sequel which I think was called "Transformation".  I'm not crazy about his writing style, but if any readers have read "Communion" please write me about it.  Is it worth reading?  I don't want to have nightmares!

  1. I've always wanted a lot of light especially in the kitchen. We bought new LEDS for the bathroom - 3 of them but had to turn two of them off cause they were too bright. Don't know anything about the book so I can't help you.

    1. Yes, the LED's are really bright, although the lower powered ones - i.e., 60w aren't too bad. I really need the light now, so they work fine for me.

  2. I think I am going to look into these bulbs, as I have started to cook more from recipes I need lots of light to read also even though I don't have macular. They say the do last a lot longer the price will be worth it

    1. I buy mine from Home Depot, and they told me if I didn't like it or got the wrong wattage, etc., to just return it (even if I had opened it up). I also tried some LED's from Costco (can't remember the brand name but the local utility was giving a discount on them). I didn't like them at all, and will only buy Cree brand at Home Depot. They are worth the price - be sure to get the "Daylight" model rather than "Soft Glow", which is sort of yellowish. When you need good light for reading you don't need a soft glow, you need a good daylight!

  3. Years ago I read Communion and it impressed upon me there are many things of our world we don't know about or understand. I don't care for his way of writing either but can't put it into words. 'Scattered' may be descriptive. I had to wade through his tales. I also had doubts of his truthfulness at times - too fantastic to believe.

Actually, "Communion" and "Transformation" both made me quite uneasy and somewhat doubtful. Weird experiences. Yet Streiber is well known in the paranormal phenomenon circles. YES, it is highly possible you will have nightmares. Maybe you will reconsider reading the book/s. Then again, maybe I'm just a sissy/coward! I don't care for unfriendly entities in the least. Streiber has a website.

    1. I thought Transformation was pretty good except that I wish he would have just accepted what it was and quit doubting himself, his sanity, the entities, etc. I have read enough by many different "experiencers" and totally believe it is happening to many, although I haven't had anything like it happen to me. I also believe the Government knows the truth and flat out lies to us about it.

  4. Some of my favorite TV shows from childhood have full episodes on YouTube - including: Sky King, Circus Boy, Amos and Andy, Rin Tin Tin, Life of Riley, Zorro, and Beverly Hillbillies.

    1. Oh my gosh, I remember listening to Sky King! Also the Lone Ranger, and a few cowboy shows. When they finally came to TV they seemed fake to me because I had a picture in my mind of what they looked like. That's the thing I don't like about movies vs. reading the book. I read and form my own movie in my mind - it never matches with the movie director's version.

    2. It's been 60 years now - maybe your tastes have changed enough to give them a 2nd chance ? Either way it is a blast from the past and still better than most things on TV.

  5. I know I have the beginnings of MD and you are right about needing more light. We too found that some of the LEDs are just too bright so we need to get lower wattages. My Dad has MD and at 95 is blind now. I'm sure not looking forward to that. Hope I don't live that long.

    1. I am very happy with the high brightness in my kitchen, although some may think it's too bright. I also love them in the lamp next to my chair where I read, work on the comnputer, etc. I have some lower wattage in the bathroom and they are fine there, but where I have to see closely I need the bright ones. You may not get Mac. Degeneration - the risk is much higher for former smokers. The risk for everything is higher for former smokers!

  6. I have two different types of those bulbs, one is pure white and the other has a yellow tint. They both work well but still need an old fashioned incandescent bulb to use next to my well and pressure tank, which I cover with a tarp in extra cold weather, to keep it from freezing.

    1. Ah, yes. The regular incandescents put out a bit of heat.

  7. Good idea to use lower power in the bathroom. Who wants to see all those wrinkles lit up! ;)

    1. Exactly! Since I no longer wear make-up or, God forbid, eye make-up, I don't need quite as much light.

  8. Since I do not recognize the guy I see in the mirror every day anyways-who needs a lot of light:)

  9. My mother has MD as well and she too needs a lot of light.

I buy my LED lightbulbs at Home Depot but I do not recall the brand. I like the daylight ones. Though I have never had luck with them lastling the years they claim on the packaging.

    1. Try one of the "Cree" branc, 100w bulb, and make sure it is "daylight" and not "soft glow". You just won't believe the light!
