Now I'm Wondering

The person in the ER who applied my temporary cast  told me I had numerous breaks in my wrist - something like 13 or 14.  my fingers were so smashed they hung them in traction so the bones might go back into place.  Then the medical person I saw, and who will apply the cast next Tuesday seemed like it was not all that big a deal.  I'm starting to doubt if I trust him to do anything.

My wrist is still in near constant pain, but so far today I've only taken advil and not the norco they prescribed.   it doesn't hurt any more and it doesn;t hurt any less, so I would rather do without the drug.

  1. Oh dear Gypsy what a situation to be in not knowing whom to trust. 13 or 14 breaks sounds just awful.

  2. Everyone has their own opinions including the specialists but you have to remember some deal with those kind of things all the time and they no longer think of them as being a problem.

  3. Well maybe if it will make you feel better go for a second opinion of your ins. allows you to do that. But yes like Rick said they see so many injuries that it is not a big deal. Hope the pain starts to ease off soon.

  4. Remember that the second doctor is an orthopedist, where the ER doctor probably was not unless they brought one in to see you. Stay strong.

  5. I have to agree with the others. ER doctors are not specialists in any one field. Your other doc is. I know when I broke my ankle the doc didn't get too excited until he realized I had also ruptured my Achilles tendon. So shattered ankle not a big deal except to me. But if you aren't comfortable with him, definutely get another opinion.

  6. I had both my wrists broken at the same time..they don't put a hard cast on right away due to any swelling, I did NOT take the narcotic because it's too risky and it could make you feel over worse, I found putting an ice pack on helped with the pain, keep it elevated on a soft pillow and I took 600 mg otc pain reliever. according to the instructions, at night it helps to put a pillow beside you and lay your arm on the pillow..it took 6 weeks for one cast to come off and 10 for the other, I did not have to have surgery but that depends on whether you bones stay in place. The Dr forced mine back into place and that hurt like hell.

  7. I want to see all of my xrays. They should provide clarification on whether there was one broken bone or several, or many.
