Stayed home today

I had thought I'd run some errands but when it gets to the 2nd half of the month I try to not spend any more money than necessary, so I stay home and avoid temptation!

I did get into some of the papers today.  I searched the retention of tax returns and found they should be kept for 7 years.  I am playing it safe and keeping 10 years' worth, although I might go back and shred a couple more years.  I took a bag of shredded paper out to the recycling bin, along with a whole lot of paper that didn't need shredding.

I have a huge number of 3 ring binders with genealogical info and papers, and I don't know who will ever be interested in it, or even understand it all.  I'll leave it intact for someone to take care of after I'm gone

I have several plastic bins with maps for every state and region of the country, and I'm going to toss them all!  I might keep the Northern CA map but that's it.  I also have a lot of National Forest/Park/BLM/etc maps, which I hope Steve will be interested in.  I got the state maps free from AAA, but paid for the National Forest and other federal land maps.

The green St. Pat's milkshakes went over pretty well, so fast that I didn't get a chance to take photos.  The corned beef and cabbage was superb, as is everything Donald cooks.  Someone made adult shakes containing various liquors but I didn't try them.  I drank two bottles of beer in 6 hrs., and even drove home in the dark.  There wasn't a whole lot of traffic out, but enough to keep me alert.  I wish I had a beer now!

  1. Do you have a recycling center in your city? They will take the maps and other paper items like books and magazines.

I bought a 12 pack to watch the game last night and I still have some left over. Wish I could send you a beer through the monitor :)

    1. I usually donate books & magazines to the local library. I'm waiting to get the card from Cerebral Palsy that a truck will be in my area to collect donations. You may remember I bought a portable elliptical exercise machine a year or so ago. It's dismantled and in the box, and that will go as well, and since it is too heavy and large for me to carry out to my car, I figure I can drag it to the front door and get it into the yard for pickup. This is really a big-time operation - the initial tidying up. I'm going to be a while on paper, even longer on photos, and then there are the household items categories. It will be worth it though. I'd sure love a beer, thank you. I have relatives coming into town for a few days and my kids are taking turns hosting them, so I'm sure I'll have a beer or two tomorrow or the next day. I don't want to get used to it, so it's just as well I don't often keep it on hand.

  2. Paper shredding is something I really need to get to soon. Pictures are all gone.
Those milkshakes must have been great to go that fast.

    1. To tell the truth I didn't care for the shakes. I prefer chocolate milkshakes but rarely ever have one.

  3. My son is planning to open a "micro brewery" business near Dallas. Wish I liked beer . . . Corned beef and cabbage are one of my favorite meals. Yum! I enjoy reading about your spring cleaning binge. My problem is keeping it orderly. I'm trying very hard to put everything back in its place.

    1. I wish your son good luck. I think the craft beers are so much better than the watery stuff they call beer that is all now owned in Europe. My favorites are a golden ale, and I also like Sam Adams lager.

I think one of the precepts of this method of decluttering is that you decide a place to keep things and always return them to their place. That's always been my problem as well, so I hope I turn over a new leaf when everything is cleaned up.

  4. Corned beef and cabbage with a green milkshake sounds fabulous. Glad you didn't put pictures though or my mouth would water.
