I'm Melting!

If there is anything I dislike as much as hot weather, it's air-conditioning.  It is undoubtedly much better in the workplace as well as in shopping environments, but truly preferred the swamp cooler in my former house.  It is 94 degrees this afternoon and predicted to go up to 98 by the end of the day.  I didn't turn the a/c on early enough and I'm certainly not going to do it now as it would probably not cool off anyway.

Sacramento is cool overnight and up to the middle of the following day, so I didn't use the ac early enough so I won't bother with it now.  I really don't want to pay high electric bills but I will have to get used to it.  Rocky has spent most of the day napping on the cool bathroom tile!

My sister and her husband are going to stay at my house the next two nights, and they are bringing their golden-doodle with them.  It will be interesting to see the dogs play together.  They are about the same size, and I'll try to get a photo.  At least Tallulah doesn't shed, while Rocky sheds all over the place.

Jeannie asked me to bring Rocky over and have dinner at their house this evening.  I would be happy to get away from here for a while - I only
took Rocky for one walk today because of the heat.   I worry about his paws on the hot pavement.

I hope you are all more comfortable with the weather you're having than I am with mine!  I have been completely miserable and listless all day, and sure hope tomorrow is a little better.

  1. My dogs are doing the same thing - being lazy and sleeping in hall or bathroom. I'm trying not to use ac from 5 - 8 due to SMUD's higher rates then but not sure how long I'll last. Really can't do much when it's this hot but lay around and read. The next few days should be cooler - YAY!

    1. I don't know why the heat is getting to me so badly this year. I also try to conserve energy especially between 5 and 8, and I hate the thought of using the ac.

  2. We are in the mid 90's already and by Sunday 100, my bedroom and master bath are on the west side and the sun beats on that part of the house all day. there is an window awning at the bedroom but it doesn't help much and the bathroom has nothing. Yesterday and bought foam art board and cut it to fit the bathroom window, so I now have that then the shade and curtains it really helped. today I went and bought black out curtains for the bedroom have to keep the heat out so the a/c doesn't run none stop. I'm not going to sit here and die from the heat. Hope you stay comfy.

    1. Have you ever wondered how people lived through the days before ac? I grew up in Cincinnati in those sweltering days, and remember every year so many people died in St. Louis from the heat. At least we don't have humidity on top of heat, but it sure isn't my favorite time of year.

    2. When I was kid we had fans all over the house. We moved into a house that had a attack with one of those trap doors and stairs. My dad bought a big window fan and mounted to the opening and it sucked the air out of the house into the attack plus having windows and more fans around the house it work pretty good.

  3. Misery loves company so I am glad I am not the only one feeling and hating the effects of this heat. I was going to hold out till June 1st but a/c went on in late May. Could not tolerate the temperatures and humidity levels.

I do not know why the heat never bothered me as a kid, teenager or young adult but it sure bothers me now. We had a swamp cooler we sometimes used during the day and a little window unit in my parents bedroom where my cousin and I slept on our slpeeing bags if it was too hot at night.

To this day I can not figure out why we did not use fans to aid in air circulation?

    1. After using a swamp cooler for several years I much prefer it over a/c, although Sacramento's climate is ideally suited for it: very little humidity, and cool breezy nights and mornings. Plus, it is certainly a lot cheaper to run. I've always used fans and have been using the ceiling fans here until the temps just got too hot for anything to help except a/c.

  4. We don't use are central AC anymore. Bought a couple of those small units on wheels. They do need vented to the outside, but there are lots of windows and can be moved to where they are needed. One in the bedroom and one in the family room seems to me sufficient. For Rocky's sake, I think you should use your AC or get the units like we have.

    1. After Jeannie coming by last night and insisting I turn on the a/c, I did and it really helped. If it was just me I'd just deal with it, but you're right about Rocky. He is able to go outside and lie in the shade, however, and in this climate it can be relatively cool in shade - in direct sun it is absolutely hellish!

  5. You are right to worry about Rocky's feet on hot pavement..you can get some booties to help with that. I have seen horrible photos of dog's feet being burned badly on hot pavement. We have gravel roads and only 1 paved street in our town of Orient, WA..so Sam, our lab, doesn't have to worry about that. Granddaughter would walk up that paved street to the little store and she had Sam walk on the gravel part on the side of the street.

    1. I'm glad to have the big back yard with the hot time of year upon us. I've heard about the booties, but laugh when I think about buying my lab, Smoky, booties for hiking in the snow years ago. He shook each paw trying to get the bootie off and after a few steps succeeded. It just wasn't natural for him and he'd rather walk in snow and ice. I can't imagine it being much different with booties for the heat.

  6. The way you are using your air conditioning by waiting till your house is so hot and then turning it on and then off again is inefficient and expensive. Try setting the sir conditioning at the highest temperature that is comfortable for you and Rocky and then just leave it on. My daughter lives in Idaho and she sets hers at 78 degrees. It keeps the house at a comfortable temperature but doesn't run when it gets cooler than that and she can open your windows at night when it cools off without the air conditioner starting up. You may even want to set yours at 80 degrees.
